2020, a Year in Review: Turning Inside and Paying Attention

I remember the strong urge back in 2018 to get settled in a position on my job that would allow me to work from home 100%. And then to homeschool my daughter by middle school. This urge was relentless. My daughter was in 4th grade at the time. So I committed to making these changes, with only two years to do it.

Almost everyone I shared my ambitious plans with thought I was losing my mind. Here I was, a single mom, working in corporate America, insisting on working from home 100%, and choosing to homeschool. Their faces said it all. They were thinking, girl, you are CRAZY! But my dream of a quieter lifestyle was as real as the nose on my face.

To reach my job goal, I fought for a position that would give me the flexibility I needed and got it in December 2019. Once I got settled on my new team, I was ready! I knew my boundaries at work and felt I could handle the title of the school teacher.

Now I was excited for the end of the school year coming May 2020. That would put an end to the school runs.

But once schools closed in March, I was prepared, especially mentally. I came to realize that the most challenging part of this whole adjustment was mental. Being called upon to make so many changes so quickly was a beast that took a swang at everyone. We all had to learn to attend meetings and make lunch in between (to say the least).

So this pandemic has taught me to stay tuned spiritually. The hustle and bustle of life can drown out clarity. And muzzle that quiet, still voice offering clear guidance to ease the pain of the unknown.

I don’t believe I can go back to that life at Mach 9 speed because this pandemic has made me realize what’s most important. Family, safety, security, and wellbeing.

As we roll into the new year, let’s remember to pace our lives where we can tune into God and hear his direction. And take the time to follow them. It’s the only recipe I know for success.
